ABOUT ME

Mweiga Estate is situated in the north of Nyeri County, near the eastern edge of the Aberdare National Park overlooking the elephant migration route that connects it to Mt Kenya Forest. The farm was established in 1919 by ex Indian Army soldiers Billy Sheldrick and Tommy Atkins who relocated there after the Great War. Sheldrick and Atkins had two objects in mind - one was to plant and farm coffee and the second was to play polo, where the latter was played every Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning until the coming of Independence. Tragedy struck the partnership in the middle of the 1920’s when Atkins was killed by a rhino so it was left to Sheldrick to pave the way for Mweiga’s coffee ambitions. One of his key agricultural influences was to increase the supply of the Mweiga stream by introducing a section of the nearby Rahuti river, which effectively negated the less than ideal rainfall in the area.

No history of the early days of Mweiga Estate would be complete without its Treetops connection. It was Sheldrick himself who, while walking in the forest, came across the original Mugumo tree and realised its potential as an observation post for watching animals, which is used to this day.

Today, coffee grown on Mweiga Estate consists of nearly all of the old varieties: the bronze tipped SL28 and bright yellow-green SL34, with some small amounts of Ruiru 11 aimed to boost disease resistance and Baitan, sharing its name with the highest peak of Mount Kenya.

This lot consists entirely of peaberries, a natural mutation that results when the coffee fruit develops only a single, little oval bean rather than the usual pair of flat-sided beans. Peaberries produce a somewhat different (often better) cup than normal beans from the same crop, from which they may or may not be separated by intensive hand-sorting during grading. We’re grateful that these little guys were, and we reckon you will be too!
